Quantifying risk can be easier said than done
Article Abstract:
The limitations of science has once again proved the difficulty for the acceptance of an adequate risk measurement. In the case of airborne particulate matter, for example, the presence of particulates of specific chemical structure and size still cannot be distinguished as the main cause of respiratory diseases and death. Factors like the presence of other contaminants in the air, and explanations on how these particulates cause diseases should also be considered. Further studies are also encouraged to unravel the said difficulties.

US urged to keep labs open to foreigners
Article Abstract:
A report by the US National Academy of Engineering suggests continuing foreign involvement in US research and development (R&D) studies without insisting on reciprocation. Legislation passed in the early 1990s requires countries to provide US companies access to R&D studies prior to foreigners' participation in US R&D studies. According to the report, the US should track US participation in foreign R&D programs and use trade sanctions rather than reciprocation laws to control it.

Self-navigation put to asteroid fly-by test
Article Abstract:
The spacecraft Deep Space 1 (DS1) is to pass within 15 kilometres of the centre of the Braille asteroid on 29 July 1999. DS1 is able to steer itself during the long cruise phase of a mission via parallax measurements of known asteroids against the star background. DS1 is the first in NASA's New Millennium spacecraft to demonstrate key technologies such as auto-navigation.
