Quantized conductance through individual rows of suspended gold atoms
Article Abstract:
There is interest in the nature of electron transport via one-dimensional nanometre-scale channels such as quantum wires and carbon nanotubes. Quantum point contacts (QPCs), where the neck of atoms bridges two electrical contacts, can be prepared by contacting a metal surface with a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). Conductance measurements on metal QPCs prepared with an STM are reported, and stands of gold atoms around one nanometre long, were observed.
