Queen number influences the primary sex ratio in the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (=Iridomyrmex humilis)
Article Abstract:
The queen among Argentine ants plays a significant role in deciding the sex ratio of the colony. A study shows that the proportion of haploid eggs laid by the queen is higher in multiple-queen colonies than in single-queen colonies. This results from the higher probability of competition between the sons of several queens in a multiple-queen colony. Females that produce more haploid eggs have greater fitness. No significant difference exists between the proportions of haploid eggs laid by the monogynous queens and polygynous queens.

Partitioning of reproduction among queens in the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile
Article Abstract:
Argentine ants collected from southern France are studied for polygynous activity, to discover the factors leading to sexual reproduction, and the potential for bearing female or male workers or queens. A genetic analysis of the ants is conducted, and charted, to show the reproduction rates of queens in several colonies. Reproductive skew was highly significant when the sex of offspring was taken into account, although overall reproductive skew was low.

Patch sampling behaviour and future foraging expectations in Argentine rats, Linepithema humile
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the sampling attitude of the foraging environment in the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, when exposed to a variable set of food patches. The ants were visually monitored from the home colony while the nest was utilized as the subunit for the data analyses. Results suggested that the ants were utilizing a sample rule based on maximizing the net benefits of finding food without the cost of sampling.
