Aggregation of whelks, Buccinum undatum, near feeding predators: the role of reproductive requirements

Does vulnerability influence trade-offs made by whelks between predation risk and feeding opportunities?
Article Abstract:
The asteroid Leptasteris polaris preys upon the whelk Buccinum undatum in the northern Gulf of the St. Lawrence River. However, whelks often aggregate near the asteroid to obtain food. Studies have shown that larger whelks are less vulnerable to the asteroid, allowing them to maintain close proximity with the predator. The results suggests that whelks exhibit threat-evaluation behavior.

A field test of threat sensitivity in a marine gastropod
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken in the Mingan Islands indicates that the whelk Buccinum undatum is sensitive to the extent of the threat presented by the predatory asteroid Leptasterias polaris. It was established that whelks are more frequently active near cruising L. polaris than near stationary ones. Among active whelks, defensive behaviour was often seen in those near cruising predators but not at all in those near stationary predators. It is likely that such discriminative capacities are adaptive for whelks.
