Article Abstract:
Membrane fusion and fission is used by all cells to assemble membranes, and the SNARE hypothesis indicates that membrane selectivity is the result of interaction of unique membrane receptors. However Ungermann and colleagues and Peters and Mayer have defined three pathway tethering stages, tethering, docking and fusion, which could challenge this hypothesis. They have shown that Ypt7p a small GTP binding protein tethers vacuoles together, which may be a step that enables fusion partners to sample and reverse unsuitable encounters.

COPII-cargo interactions direct protein sorting into ER-derived transport vesicles
Article Abstract:
Research into the role of coat proteins in cargo selection and recruitment indicates that cargo packaging signals and soluble cargo adaptors are recognized by a recruitment complex made up of Sarl-GTP and Sec23/24. These form a specific complex with integral membrane and soluble vesicle cargo in the endoplasmic reticulum. The fact that a consensus sequence is not present among the transported proteins could indicate that different signals have developed to be decoded by a number of coat adaptor proteins.

SEC21 is a gene required for ER to Golgi transport that encodes a subunit of a yeast coatomer
Article Abstract:
The SEC21 gene is required by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for transportation of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi. A subunit of a yeast non-clathrin coatomer is encoded by this gene. This is the first demonstration that a non-clathrin coat protein is essential to transportation between compartments.
