Red-shouldered hawk broadcast surveys: factors affecting detection of responses and population trends
Article Abstract:
Broadcast surveys at active red-shouldered hawk nests in northcentral Minnesota were conducted to determine the effects of type of call, time of day and phase of the breeding cycle on response behavior, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of broadcasts as monitoring tools using area occupied-probability-of-detection techniques. Findings indicated conspecific calls broadcast prior to hatch and early in the day were the most effective method of detecting the hawks. Computer simulations revealed that broadcast surveys have the potential to be used as a population monitoring tool.

Anthropogenic effects on winter behavior of ferruginous hawks
Article Abstract:
The ferruginous hawk is a specialized species that occupies a narrow range of habitats, but little is known about its behavior and habitat needs during winter. A new study uses radiotelemetry to investigate the behavior of 35 hawks at two sites in Colorado, describes their use of winter habitat and analyses the effect of human activity. The study suggests that home range size is not related to the size of the available foraging patch and the behavior of ferruginous hawks is modified in human-altered habitats provided nonanthropogenic prey sources are available.

Red-shouldered Hawk occupancy surveys in Central Minnesota, USA
Article Abstract:
The Red-shouldered Hawk call-broadcast survey conducted in Central Minnesota, USA, was analyzed by using maximum-likelihood models to estimate their occupancy and detection probability. Estimates were found similar with different sampling strategies such as double and discontinued sampling and varied in number of sample locations.
