Reducing transgene escape routes
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to obtain high levels of transgene expression by engineering tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate into the tobacco chloroplast genome. Furthermore, as chloroplasts are inherited maternally in many species, they have also stopped transmission of the gene by pollen. This means that it is not possible for transgenes to escape into the environment via this route. The possibility of preventing transgene movement via pollen offers potential for simplifying the risk assessment of transgenic crops with maternal inheritance of chloroplasts.

Tobacco-plant desiccation tolerance
Article Abstract:
The transgenic tobacco plant, transformed using the TPS1 gene, is capable of synthesizing trehalose, which increases the plant's drought tolerance. Tobacco leaves usually show an initial rapid water-loss and late slow water-loss phases. However, the transgenic plants go through a slow water-loss phase at greater fresh weights. Their stomata begin to close at milder drought stress, resulting in water retention for longer time periods.

French panel calls for closer monitoring of genetic modification
Article Abstract:
A French panel has concluded that more research on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is required to assess the risks properly. The panel acknowledged the potential benefits for GMOs in medicine, but recommended that research should be undertaken by national research agencies. It also wants to see improvements in the structure and procedures of the Commission de Genie Moleculaire, the government advisory body on GMOs.
