Control of neural crest cell fate by the Wnt signalling pathway
Article Abstract:
It is known that environmental signals are critical in the development of neural crest but their nature is unknown. Previous studies of zebrafish suggest that that Wnt-1 and Wnt-3a are candidate genes for determining the future of neural crest. A new study investigates the role of Wnt signals in determining neural crest fate. It is shown that Wnt signalling promotes pigment-cell formation by medial crest cells and is a contributor to the wide range of neural crest cell outcomes.

Somatic linker histones cause loss of mesodermal competence in Xenopus
Article Abstract:
A study examining the loss of mesodermal competence in Xenopus is presented. The investigation studies the concomitant, global change in expression of H1 linker histone subtypes, which are generally considered to be repressors of transcription. However, in Xenopus they are thought to have selective functions in the regulation of transcription.
