Regulatory factor linked to late-onset diabetes?
Article Abstract:
The protein encoded by the gene pdx-1, which encodes a transcription factor for the insulin gene and controls pancreatic development, is needed for glucose homeostasis in the adult pancreas. It has been established that mice heterozygous for the gene pdx-1 have impaired glucose tolerance. In humans, a deficiency in pdx-1 could be responsible for a predisposition to the development of late-onset diabetes, especially against a background of other genetic mutations within the insulin-signalling cascade.

The road not taken
Article Abstract:
Two studies of somatotrophs in the pituitary gland of dwarf mice clarify the role of extracellular signals in cell ontogeny. An inherited mutation of the growth-hormone-releasing factor (GRF) receptor gene causes somatotroph hypoplasia and dwarfism, indicating that GRF is both a hypothalamic-releasing hormone and a trophic factor. Lactotrophs do not express GRF receptors, so other regulatory factors must come into play after their bifurcation from somatotrophs.

CREB controls hepatic lipid metabolism through nuclear hormone receptor PPAR-gamma
Article Abstract:
The mice deficient in CREB activity has a fatty liver phenotype and display elevated expression of the nuclear hormone receptor PPAR-gamma. CREB inhibits hepatic PPAR-gamma expression in the fasted state by stimulating the expression of the Hairy Enhancer of Split (HES-1) gene.
