Relationship between eruption volume and neodymium isotopic composition at Unzen volcano
Article Abstract:
Strontium, neodymium and oxygen isotopic compositions of mantle-derived magmas and continental crust can be used to determine different continental silicic magmas. These can also help in predicting volcanic activity by providing knowledge about the parameters which control volume and composition of erupted magma. Isotope data for lavas from Unzen volcano in Japan are presented. It is suggested that the information is vital in assessing volcanic hazard when timescales for magma-chamber evolutions are just decades.

Mechanisms of magma eruption and emplacement at Mt Etna between 1989 and 1992
Article Abstract:
The volcanic processes at Mt Etna from 1989 to 1992 are best understood using microgravity monitoring in conjunction with seismic measures and analysis of ground deformation. The results show that magma went into low-stress areas to cause elastic deformation which led to increased fracturing in the flanks of the volcano. The fractures were not filled until the buildup to the eruptions of 1991 and after.

The formation of Mount Etna as the consequence of slab rollback
Article Abstract:
The formation of Mount Etna is linked to the subduction zone close by. It is believed that the melting under the volcano is the result of asthenospheric material which comes from the African plate. The rollback motion of the Ionian slab results in a rift zone beginning between the arc and the forearc, magmatism at the arc, and the rise of the forearc.
