Responses of aardwolves, Proteles cristatus, Sparrman 1783, to translocated scent marks
Article Abstract:
The responses of known aardwolves to translocated scent marks of other individuals of known sex and reproductive status were monitored to investigate the functions of scent marking. Aardwolves were followed and grass stalks with single fresh scent marks were collected and placed the next evening at dens and middens of another aardwolf. In 43 experiments, 617 stalks were translocated, of which 164 were located by the aardwolves followed. Results indicate that scent markers may be used to intimidate intruders and to synchronize mating in the species.

Conditions for landmark-based navigation in the house mouse, Mus musculus
Article Abstract:
It was investigated whether mice, after learning to home by relying on visual extra-arena landmarks, still required instantaneous access to such cues for successful navigation. An experiment was conducted, wherein two groups of lactating mice were trained to retrieve their pups from the centre of a circular arena back to their peripheral nest. The results indicated that viewing the visual cues when homing, was necessary for landmark-based navigation.

The role of scent marking in the social communication of wild golden lion tamarins, Leontopithecus rosalia
Article Abstract:
Four nonexclusive hypotheses explaining the role of scent-marking frequency in different ecological and social conditions are studied. The results indicate that alpha females increased their scent marking frequency to communicate to members of other groups, while the presence of members of other groups did not elicit a similar response by alpha males.
