Responses of auditory-cortex neurons to structural features of natural sounds
Article Abstract:
Auditory processing of natural sounds has been mainly studied in the context of species-specific vocalizations. Sound from a variety of different environments was analyzed, and it was found that energy in different frequency bands is coherently modulated for certain non-animal sounds and background combinations of sounds. Co-modulation helps noise tone detection by humans, known as co-modulation masking release (CMR). It also enhances the ability of auditory-cortex neurons to determine tones in noise and this may underlie behavioural CMR.

Sign language 'heard' in the auditory cortex
Article Abstract:
The upper regions of the temporal lobe of the brain are important in hearing and comprehension of spoken language. The regions have been shown to be activated by sign language in congenitally deaf subjects, suggesting that the brain region for hearing could be activated by other sensory modalities, providing evidence of neural plasticity. Sign language was found to activate the 'language' areas, although not primary auditory cortex, and the sign language area was identified as the supratemporal gyri.

Linear processing of spatial cues in primary auditory cortex
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the spatial selectivity of A1 neurons which can be predicted accurately by a linear model. The computation of auditory spacial cues through the auditory cortex in animals is discussed.
