Running rings around RNA
Article Abstract:
The crystal structure of two SM protein complexes has been reported in a study by Kambach and colleagues, providing new insights into the mechanism of the RNA splicing machinery. They determined the structure of the bent Beta-sheets for D(sub1), D(sub2), D(sub3) and B, and found closely superimposed SM1 and Sm2 motifs, suggesting that the Sm motif conserved amino acids form a specific structural domain in Sm proteins.

Regulation of alternative splicing by RNA editing
Article Abstract:
The double stranded RNA-specific adenosine deaminase enzyme ADAR2 is involved in mammalian messenger RNA editing. Several rat ADAR2 mRNAs have been identified, produced from distinct alternative splicing events. Adenosine-adenosine (AA) and adenosine-guanosine (AG) dinucleotides were present at the proximal and distal alternative 3' acceptor sites. RNA editing may act as a mechanism to regulate alternative splicing.
