Russian summer hopes dwarf doubts
Article Abstract:
Russian science has begun to show signs of surviving the economic changes there, although basic research is likely to need substantial government and international support for the foreseeable future. The large-scale departure of Russian scientists to other countries after the government liberalized immigration laws has not been as damaging as anticipated. Although Russian laboratories are starting to receive help from Western companies, the decline in the publishing of Russian scientific journals indicates the persistence of economic hardship.

Making sense of dwarf-star evolution
Article Abstract:
T.R. Marsh of the University of Southampton, Great Britain, has found a binary system in which each component is a white dwarf and a tight orbit with a period of 3.47 hours provides evidence of motion. He was able to find, from the spectra taken by the William Herschel telescope on La Palma, clear evidence that the star's H-alpha line is being split by the to-and fro motion of the stars in their orbit about the common center. According to Marsh, this double white dwarf may have already lost some of its angular momentum and orbital length.

Russia's summer bout of optimism
Article Abstract:
Inflation in Russia has led to decrease in spending on scientific equipment and supplies. The Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin has not kept his promise of paying the researchers under any circumstances, and the Russian Academy cannot do much to help them either. Many researchers are leaving for the United States for better future prospects because of the financial condition. The few remaining researchers are anxious about their future, and it is possible that there will be a confrontation between them and the government.
