Import of carrier proteins into the mitochondrial inner membrane mediated by Tim22
Article Abstract:
Tim22 is responsible for the import of proteins belonging to the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier (AAC) into the inner membrane. Tim22 is present in an assembly of high relative molecular mass, which is different from the Tim23-Tim17 complex and is present in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Import of the AAC family proteins are independent of Tim23 but is dependent on the Tim22. The import of the preproteins having matrix targeting signals is independent of Tim22. This indicates that Tim22 represents a pathway distinct and independent of Tim23 pathway.

Visualizing secretion and synaptic transmission with pH-sensitive green fluorescent proteins
Article Abstract:
Information in neural systems is often transported by groups of cells, rather than individual units. Such distributed activity is revealed by optical indicators. Sensors for secretion and neurotransmission are described, following the development of pH-sensitive mutants of green fluorescent protein using structure-directed combinatorial mutagenesis. PHluorins were sorted to secretory and synaptic vesicles when linked to a vesicle membrane protein.
