Scientists rethink approach to HIV gels
Article Abstract:
The failure of a candidate microbicide gel in large clinical trials has highlighted that scientists should change their approach to combat the HIV epidemic. The U.S. National Institutes of Health's Office of AIDS Research has set up a working group on microbicides that is expected to solicit advice from independent experts about which products should proceed to clinical trials.

Robust Salmonella metabolism limits possibilities for new antimicrobials
Article Abstract:
In vivo information about over 700 Salmonella enterica enzymes from network analysis of mutant phenotypes, genome comparisons and Salmonella proteomes from infected mice are obtained. The comprehensive in vivo analysis suggests a shortage of new metabolic targets for broad-spectrum antibiotics, and draws attention to the previously known but unexploited targets.
