Licensing fees slow advance of stem cells
Article Abstract:
Companies around the world are working on stem cells, exploring uses that range from drug discovery to drug screening, and from toxicology to cellular therapies for Parkinson's and heart disease. However company with low budget could not find the $100,000 up-front fee that would allow it to take out a commercial research license from the major patent holder in the field, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF).

Article Abstract:
Research on human embryonic stem cells has become a bone of fierce political contention in the United States. The advocacy of such people as the actor Christopher Reeve-whose untimely death this week deprives biomedical research of one of its most forceful and effective lobbyists-has helped to elevate the promise of embryonic-stem-cell research, sometimes to unrealistic levels.

The issue of a state-wide referendum on whether to issue a $3-billion bond to support embryonic stem-cell research is reported. Views of the people who are for and against the research on moral grounds as well as its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed.
