Seasonal movements of sandhill cranes radiomarked in Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Article Abstract:
Radiomarking has given valuable information about the seasonal movements of sandhill cranes in Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, WY. It has been established that Rocky Mountain Population greater sandhill cranes disperse in spring and summer in pairs, nonbreeding flocks or family units in wetlands and linked upland habitats in forested and arid shrubland areas in western Wyoming and neighbouring states. They usually leave summer sites in Aug and Sep, moving to nearby premigration staging areas. Radiomarked cranes showed strong loyalty to specific areas in their geographic range in successive years.

Distribution and abundance of sandhill cranes in Mexico
Article Abstract:
Aerial surveys by US Fish and Wildlife Service made between 1953 and 1994 and ground surveys yield the following data. Wintering cranes are highly concentrated in the Northern Highlands of Chihuahua and Durango. About 39 sites have been identified as important wintering areas and these are recommended as preserved areas. Marked changes in crane population in certain areas have been observed and this may be due to food availability, wetland water levels and disturbance. More accurate aerial and ground monitoring systems are needed to provide data on crane status.

Seasonal movements of sandhill cranes radiomarked in Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Article Abstract:
Seasonal movements and survival of cranes radiomarked at summer areas in Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, WY, are reported and important areas used in the Rocky Mountains during the annual cycle are identified. Eight flightless young and one breeding adult were captured and radiomarked in Yellowstone National Park during Aug 1984-85 and two in Jackson Hole, in Jul 1986. Seasonal movements of radiomarked cranes from the two sites affirmed their affiliation with the Rocky Mountain Population of greater sandhill cranes.
