In vitro fertilization (IVF), first successful in1978, has grown in popularity. Specialists are now questioning whether 'forcing' fertilization through invasive means and bypassing the process of natural selection. is doing more harm than good, or whether it is simply passing on genetic defects and predisposition to certain diseases (such as Beckwith -Wiedemann syndrome) through procedures that might be damaging the embryo as it is created.
