Selenium in blood of predatory birds from Kesterson reservoir and other areas in California
Article Abstract:
Kesterson Reservoir, California, was once a wetland, and has been contaminated with selenium. which caused reproductive failure and high mortality for aquatic birds. It has become a grassland, and terrestrial birds do not appear to be affected by selenium in the same way. Predatory birds from the region were analyzed for selenium blood levels and were found to have higher levels than birds elsewhere. The eggs of predatory birds also showed higher selenium levels than previously set toxicity thresholds for birds.

The efficacy of baits containing 1080 for control of brushtail possums
Article Abstract:
Sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) bait is used to kill brushtail possums in New Zealnd. Possums damage bird life and forests and function as a reservoir for some diseases. Captive possums were fed bait to assess the level needed to kill them. Possums were more likely to ingest lethal doses if they were young or female. The palatability of the bait is also important. Bait that is not palatable is more likely to lead to possums ingesting doses that lead to a slow death, or to the possum surviving.
