Separating mantle from slab signatures in arc lavas using B/Be and radiogenic isotope systematics
Article Abstract:
The B/Be, Sr, Nd and Pb isotope systematics of alkaline, calc-alkaline and tholeiitic lavas from Java and Flores, Indonesia, were used to delimit the isotopic composition of their mantle and subduction sources. The results showed that alkaline lavas always have low B/Be, indicating that they come from mantle that has not been recently modified by subduction. The isotopic composition of the subducted component was relatively homogenous along the length of the magma arc, indicating that the subduction of Australian lithosphere in the east was too recent to have affected the subducted material beneath the Flores.

The exception is the rule
Article Abstract:
Comparison of modern seismic activity to the distribution of slip in previous earthquakes may yield a method of predicting tsunamis generated by earthquakes. The mode of rupture in seismic zones varies greatly in velocity, direction and distribution from cycle to cycle. Regions along plate boundaries that have not slipped for a long time do not seem to be more prone to rupture, as previously thought. Rather, earthquakes seem to cluster in time and space.

Geochemical tracing of Pacific-to-Atlantic upper-mantle flow through the Drake passage
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the geochemical evidence for the outflow of Pacific mantle into the Drake passage. The existence of a mantle domain boundary between the east Scotia Sea and Drake passage is discussed.
