Severe neuropathies in mice with targeted mutations in the ErbB3 receptor
Article Abstract:
ErbB3, a high-affinity neuregulin receptor, acts in a cell-autonomous way during the development of Schwann cells. However, it does not function in this way in the survival of sensory or motor neurons. Degeneration of the peripheral nervous system in erbB3 mutant pups is considerably more severe than the cell death in mice lacking neurotrophins or neurotrophin receptors. The phenotype of erbB3 mutant mice clearly shows the importance of neuregulins and their receptors in the development of Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system.

A stomatin-domain protein essential for touch sensation in the mouse
Article Abstract:
A study proves that about 35% of skin mechanoreceptors do not respond to mechanical stimuli in mice with a mutation in stomatin-like protein 3, a mammalian mec-2 homologue that is expressed in sensory neurons. The results prove that SLP3 is indispensable for the function of a subset of cutaneous mechanoreceptors because without SLP3 the mechanosensitive ion channels in sensory neurons do not function and tactile-drive behaviors are also impaired.
