Sex-related differences in habitat selection in wintering American kestrels, Falco sparverius
Article Abstract:
A study of American kestrels, Falco sparverius, investigates habitat selection in wintering kestrels to test the competing hypotheses that females and males prefer different habitats and that smaller males may be excluded from preferred areas by larger females. Experiments were carried out in a 800 sq km study area in south-eastern Pennsylvania where up to 100 pairs of kestrels nest annually. Kestrels were removed from 20 areas and reoccupation numbers and types were recorded. Results show that habitat choice may be determined by predation risk.

Prey selection while diving by common eiders, Somateria mollissima
Article Abstract:
The dive duration and prey selection in common eiders, Somateria mollissima, was observed while wintering in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada. A model was developed to predict whether dive duration affects prey choice such that shorter dives occur due to the capture of high-energy crabs and longer dives occur due to the capture of low-energy ubiquitous urchins or fruitless dives. The model was true when observed in eiders diving in shallow waters. However, the model overestimates the duration of dives in deeper waters.
