Sexual coercion in a territorial salamander: females punish socially polygynous male partners
Article Abstract:
The proposition of sexual coercion in females, was tested in laboratory experiments with territorial red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus. It is inferred that females attempt to control social polygyny by partners through aggression during the courtship season but that this coercion ceases in the spring when the females are preoccupied with searching for nest sites for brooding their eggs.

The influence of tail autotomy on agonistic behaviour in a territorial salamander
Article Abstract:
The influence of tail loss on the agonistic behavior of territorial red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, was investigated by experimentally modifying the tail conditions of intruder and resident salamanders. The salamanders altered their behavior based on the tail condition of their opponent. With intruders showing more aggression towards tail-less residents. Further, the expression of agonistic behavior is more intense in encounters between tail-less opponents than those between tailed competitors.
