Sexual selection and the evolution of mechanical sound production in manakins (Aves: Pipridae)
Article Abstract:
Modulated, non-vocal, mechanical sounds of the lek-breeding Neotropical manakins (Pipridae) were surveyed and classified. Acoustic structure of the sounds suggested that at least four different physical mechanisms of mechanical sound production have evolved: short, broad-frequency spectrum pulses; short, low-frequency pulses; aerodynamic vortices; and harmonic oscillations. Intersexual selection for acrobatic display may play an important role in the evolution of unique preferences for incidental non-vocal sounds emitted by acrobatic movements.

Social inertia in white-throated sparrows results from recognition of opponents
Article Abstract:
Social inertia is the term for the stability of dominance relationships. Social inertia in 16 groups of white-throated sparrows, Zonotrichia albicollis, was investigated. Dominance relationships showed social inertia when low-ranking treated birds were placed with familiar high-ranking untreated opponents. Testosterone influenced dominance when such birds were placed with unfamiliar opponents. White-throated sparrows are able to recognize their opponents and this affects both dominance and aggression expression.
