Short magma chamber residence time at an Icelandic volcano inferred from U-series disequilibria
Article Abstract:
The disequilibrium between daughter nuclides of the 238U decay series in the lavas of the Vestmannaeyjar volcanic system, Iceland, indicates that the lavas were ejected from the volcanoes within 10 yrs. of the magma's injection into the magma chambers. The lavas have a high concentration of 226Ra as compared to the 230Th and 210Pb levels. The disequilibrium decreases with differentiation probably due to the formation of hawaiite and mugearite, and a magma chamber residence time of 10 yrs.. The short residence time is due to the injection of a small amount of alkali basalt into a cold crust.

Seismic evidence for a magma chamber beneath the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Article Abstract:
The lack of evidence for the existence of magma chambers at sub-seafloor depths below the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) indicates that these chambers either lie significantly deep or are transient features. Analysis of 1989 data of seismic reflections from the Snake Pit hydrothermal region reveals a small dome, approximately 1,200 m below the sea-bed, characteristic of the seismic behavior of small magma chambers which experience quicker cooling, suggesting transience.

Discovery of a magma chamber and faults beneath a Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal field
Article Abstract:
The discovery of a crustal magma chamber beneath the slow-spreading Lucky Strike segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is reported, which is believed to provide the heat for the active hydrothermal vent field above it. Axial valley bounding faults that seem to penetrate down to the magma chamber depth and a set of inward-dipping faults cutting through the volcanic edifice are observed, suggesting continuous interactions between tectonic and magmatic processes.
