The US animal industry has a political clout that can remove legislative obstacles laid by the animal rights movement. Such strong influence was achieved through long and hard years of lobbying and supporting candidacies that allowed cozy relationships with lawmakers to be established.

Exotic animals have become popular as pets but the interest is not matched by concern for their welfare. The owners soon lose interest in the animals and resell them to zoos and auctions. The animals also suffer from isolation, unsuitability to different climates and inadequate diets.
