Sighting the seas of Europa: planetary exploration
Article Abstract:
The Galileo spacecraft has passed close by Europa on two occasions, revealing that it is dynamic and geologically active, with evidence of subsurface water. The Voyager missions of 1979 suspected an ocean under Europa's ice covering, and this led to theoretical models allowing the possibility of a liquid layer. It was argued that there was separation of the icy crust and the long range image taken in November 1996 provides proof of the interpretation. The Galileo images show three distinct stages of lineament formation, consistent with a tidal stress pattern which could indicate the eruption of liquid water.

Killer acid at the K/T boundary
Article Abstract:
Evidence confirming the theory that an asteroid or comet's impact may have caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and other life at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary 65 million years ago was presented at the 23rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, held in Houston, TX, Mar 16-20, 1992. Geological research at Chicxulub in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula found the remains of a 180-kilometer-wide crater left over from the collision. Geochemical analysis of the crater found elevated acid levels, helping to confirm that a devastating impact took place there.

Sublime solar system ices
Article Abstract:
Several forms of ice are present in the solar system on the satellites, planets and comets. Solid forms of oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide, ammonia, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and formaldehyde are the various types of ice, according to solid-state physics where any weakly bonded molecular solid is ice. The discovery of so many ice supplies raises may research questions such as the possibility of a liquid ocean in Europa and the source of Earth's water.
