Sleeping beauty awakens
Article Abstract:
The improvements to the Sleeping Beauty (SB) technology are presented and the system to identify genes involved in cancer is exploited. A major advantage of the SB system over viral or previously used transposon systems is that, because the transposon comes from fish, it is distinct from the large number of native transposons present making it easy to find the exact site in the genome where SB integrates.

Fitness costs of R-gene-mediated resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana
Article Abstract:
The presence of a cost of resistance at the RPM1 locus of Arabidopsis thaliana, is tested. The results of a field experiment comparing the fitness of isogenic strains that differ in the presence or absence of RPM1 and its natural promoter reveal a large cost of RPM1, providing the first evidence that costs contribute to the maintenance of an ancient R-gene polymorphism.

Abiscic acid in bloom
Article Abstract:
Plants must respond to the hormone abiscic acid (ABA) in order to survive environmental stresses. Research shows that a receptor for this hormone, an RNA-binding protein called FCA, is involved in the inhibition of flowering and is an example of newly emerging mechanisms by which plant growth regulators mediate their responses.
