Uncertainty over fate of Mir experiments
Article Abstract:
Efforts are being made by US and Russian engineers and scientists to see whether power to the damaged Mir space station's laboratory modules can be restored. It is believed that some of the experiments have been lost, but the extent will not be known until an inventory of the equipment inside the module is made. Mir's full research capabilities can only be restored when the module's solar arrays are reconnected, as they provided around half the station's electrical power.

Earth holds comet smash in its sights
Article Abstract:
Big telescopes are prepared to view the collision between NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft and the unsuspecting comet- Tempel, which will gouge a hole and throw out materials from the comet's interior that scientist hope will reveal much about its make-up and thereby the origins of the Solar System. This copper-fortified craft, released from a flyby spacecraft carrying the primary imaging instruments, will smash into the 4 X 14-kilometre target at 10 kilometers per second.
