Social manipulation causes cooperation in keas
Article Abstract:
Dominant keas (Nestor notabilis) can forcefully get cooperation from subordinates through social manipulation. A study using 7 keas in an instrumental task condition shows that the dominant bird always obtains food, while its submissive counterpart cooperates in the dyadic task. Due to non-linear nature of the dominance hierarchy, each bird has a submissive counterpart. In the group task situation, birds cooperate in such a way that the reward distribution is symmetrical among group members.

A case of quick problem solving in birds: string pulling in keas, Nestor notabilis
Article Abstract:
Problem solving methods employed by caged keas are studied. String pulling methods of different keas to get to the food suspended from a string are observed.
