Song-based species discrimination and behaviour assessment by female blackbirds, Turdus merula
Article Abstract:
An experiment exploring song-based species discrimination and behavior assessment by female blackbirds, Turdus merula, was conducted. Results indicate that females ignore the upper limit of song variation and degree of modulation. Behavior assessment is also affected by dense vegetation, giving credence to the song degradation hypothesis that states that different birds attend to certain features of songs if the song is degraded. Females ignore the pauses between sound figures.

The signal function of overlapping singing in male robins
Article Abstract:
The singing patterns of the robin, Erithacus rubecula, was analyzed to determine the mechanics or underlying factors that influences the timing of song production in song birds during singing interactions. Analysis of interactive playback experiments with territorial robins indicated the role of overlapping playback in eliciting twittering in the test birds. However, the overlapping and loop playback elicited a similar but lower response in Erithacus rubecula. Furthermore, overlapping songs elicited a higher degree of arousal compared to alternating songs in robins.
