Space researchers protest at 'disruptive' export controls
Article Abstract:
Groups including the Council on Governmental Relations and the Association of American Universities have protested against new US government export control policies introduced as a reaction to concern in Congress about the sale of missile technology to China. Claude Canizares, chair of the National Academy of Sciences' Space Studies Board, believes that the new regulations place an extremely heavy burden on most universities involved in spacecraft missions. NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin has emphasized the importance of respecting legitimate national security concerns.

US broadens scientific base of controls on carcinogens
Article Abstract:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has come out with revised guidelines for risk assessment of human cancer that will facilitate regulation of carcinogens. The EPA guidelines allow for the use of a broader range of information such as genetic data and testing for biological effects that cause tumor formation. Risk assessors would be allowed to apply non-linear dose-response approaches to the estimation of toxic effects at low doses, and take in account carcinogenicity in pregnant women and children.

Patent on gene fragment sends researchers a mixed message..
Article Abstract:
The first US patent for expressed sequence tags (ESTs) has been awarded leading to speculation that similar rights could soon be awarded to gene fragments with patents pending. The patent has been granted to Incyte Pharmaceuticals Inc of California is for a full-length gene with highly characterized fragments. Biotechnology patents call for correspondence between what is described by the applicant and what the applicant is claiming, and any patented invention has to pass several tests.
