Spatial and temporal variation in sperm whale coda vocalizations: Stable usage and local dialects
Article Abstract:
Variation in the vocal output of sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, which use short stereotyped click sequences called codas in social contexts was studied over timescales of up to 6 years and spatial scales of up to 10 000 nautical miles. Evidence was found for reduced similarity over distances of 200-1000 km but no evidence was found from either correlation or regression analyses for change overtime in the coda output of known social units.

Trade-offs in signaling components differ with signaling effort
Article Abstract:
The conditions under which males make trade-offs among components of signaling effort in the Texas field cricket, Gryllus texensis, is explored. High-effort males revealed strong trade-offs between bout duration and hourly bout number and between trill amplitude and hourly bout number, whereas low-effort males revealed no trade-offs between any of their trilling components.
