Division of labour and seasonality in the ant Leptothorax albipennis: worker corpulence and its influence on behaviour
Article Abstract:
Research describing the association between nutrient status and role in the ant, Leptothorax albipennis, is presented. A body size-controlled method was used to quantify worker lipid stores, which were related to the behaviour of workers.

Ants move to improve: Colonies of Leptothorax albipennis emigrate whenever they find a superior nest site
Article Abstract:
The ant, Leptothorax albipennis, rectifies its errors made by hurried decision by continuing to survey even after a colony had settled in a nest site. The ants emigration strategies were compared with emergency emigrations from destroyed nests and the reasons behind the emigration are described.

Spatial relationships within nests of the ant Leptothorax unifasciatus (Latr.) and their implications for the division of labour
Article Abstract:
The division of labor in L. unifasciatus ants is flexibly organised in a zonal pattern, with ants performing the duty associated with its proximate zone. The study of organization of movement zones of all the ants in a colony revealed that individual workers in L. unifasciatus colonies had movement zones of limited area. The size of SFZs enhances towards the periphery from the centre of the colony. The median size of SFZ in a colony differed during the time of a year and they slowly expanded after hibernation, reaching a maximum size in May and then gradually contracting until the following hibernation.
