Specification of neuroblast identity in the Drosophila embryonic central nervous system by gooseberry-distal
Article Abstract:
The Pax-type gooseberry-distal gene is essential in establishing row 5 neuroblast identity in the Drosophila embryonic central nervous system. With the help of 10 molecular markers and by following the number and orientation of neuroblast divisions, it has been shown that the lack of the gooseberry-distal gene transforms row 5 neuroblasts into row 3 neuroblasts. This evidence supports the independent regulation of proneural genes through the gooseberry-distal gene and the involvement of proneural genes in neuroblast identity specification.

Staufen-dependent localization of prospero mRNA contributes to neuroblast daughter-cell fate
Article Abstract:
Cellular diversity is needed for embryos to develop, and this is especially true for the central nervous system. Cell interactions can lead to daughter cells being born which vary in terms of their fates. A study of Drosophila shows that there are developmental and molecular differences between neural precursors, ganglion mother cells (GMCs), and daughter cells, linked to the asymmetric localization of an RNA-binding protein and messenger RNA. GMC development is affected by loss of localization of pros RNA.
