Stabilizing and directional female choice for male calls in the European green toad
Article Abstract:
The advertisement call of the European green toad, Bufo viridis, was used as a framework to examine the effect of the variability of different acoustic characteristics of the mating call on female preferences. Results demonstrated that females preferred extreme to mean values of the dynamic characteristics, although these are not typical of the population. However, females do not prefer mean and below mean values of static characteristics.

Active choice, passive attraction and the cognitive machinery of acoustic preferences
Article Abstract:
Multitrial discrimination experiments, in which females are given a choice between two stimuli differing in either the power or the distance of their sources or both is conducted to test which hypothesis could best explain the preference for loud calls of female green toads, Bufo viridis. Results suggest that sound intensity plays a more complex role in female mate choice than that recognized by the passive attraction hypothesis.

African elephant vocal communication II: Rumble variation reflects the individual identity state of callers
Article Abstract:
Studies have examined detailed acoustic measurements of a large number of calls with reference to African elephant. Rumbles, as a whole did not cluster into distinct acoustic types however structural variation in rumbles reflected the individual identity and emotional state of callers.
