Stable-isotope probing as a tool in microbial ecology
Article Abstract:
Stable-isotope probing (SIP) appears to have the potential for wide application in microbial ecology. This technique can be used to identify microorganisms that are actively involved in specific metabolic processes under conditions which are close to those arising in situ. Research in this area has demonstrated that 13C-DNA, which arises during the growth of metabolically distinct microbial roups on a 13C-enriched carbon source, can be resolved from 12C-DNA by density-gradient centrifugation. It will be possible to use SIP to identify many microorganisms with a role in the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in the environment.

Two episodes of microbial change coupled with Permo/Triassic faunal mass extinction
Article Abstract:
Two episodes of faunal mass extinction where each preceded by minima in the 2-methylhopane (2-MHP) index, followed by strong maxima, likely reflecting microbial responses to the catastrophic events that caused the extinction and initiated ecosystem changes are discussed. Hence, both cyanobacterial biomarker and invertebrate fossil records provide evidence for two episodes of biotic crisis across the Permo/Triassic.
