Storm in a fish pond
Article Abstract:
The proposed plans to urbanize the outer region of Deep Bay, Hong Kong, have come under criticism by conservationists due to the importance of the ponds for migratory birds. Among the proposed plans is one for Sunnyville Estate, which involves a housing complex and a golf course. The plan was initially approved by WWF (World Wildlife Fund)-Hong Kong, but later opposed as studies showed the ponds to be major feeding grounds for birds. Hong Kong has failed to list Deep Bay under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The transfer of Hong Kong to China in 1997 poses another threat to the region.

Saving Saunders's gull
Article Abstract:
The world population of the Saunders' gull has dwindled to only about 2,000, and two important colonies of the black-headed gulls are being wiped out by development in China. The Shuangtaizihekou reserve in Liaoning province will be bulldozed to create a reservoir, and about half of a colony at the Yen Cheng, north of Shanghai, will die because of the installation of salt ponds and shrimp ponds. David Melville, the director of World Wildlife fund - Hong Kong, has initiated a drive to aid the birds. The birds require only salt marshes for nesting and mud flats for crabbing.
