Strategy seeks to make the most of Scottish science
Article Abstract:
A long-term strategic plan known as Technology Ventures will encourage commercial exploitation in Scotland of scientific discoveries made in its 13 universities. Scotland ranks third in the world in terms of scientific papers per head of population, but few of its scientific outputs have been capitalized on by the Scottish industry. A high-level leadership group of Scottish Enterprise is promoting the initiative that will exploit networking experiences to promote cooperation between the academic world, business groups, and the public sector.

CERN comes under fresh financial pressure
Article Abstract:
Germany's decision to effect a 10% cut in its annual subscription to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 1997 has added to the financial problems of the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland. Reduced European contributions will have a crucial impact on the planned construction and completion of LHC. Proposals for non-European membership to reduce the financial burden on CERN members is doubtful in the current political context. The German move hints at a reappraisal of the funding projections for LHC.

Europe 'needs one voice on large machines.'
Article Abstract:
France has proposed an annual meeting for European research ministers to secure a joint European stand in negotiations with the US and Japan on the funding, establishment and utility of large-scale research facilities. As the president of the Council of Ministers, France has also suggested an enhancement of the political status of the European Commission's Science and Technology Research Committee. These efforts are aimed at establishing a European-level scientific policy.
