Stressed molecules break down
Article Abstract:
Tough carbon-carbon bonds can snap in certain large molecules because the two sides of the molecule do not coordinate during adsorption. In many organic materials and elstomers, stress induced scission of chemical bonds is a costly problem, and so the work of Sheiko could provide a general model for designing molecular materials that have an architecture better able to cope with mechanical stress.

Molecules squeezed and stroked
Article Abstract:
When the polymer is squeezed to a thickness of three or four molecular layers, the middle layers also slides, resulting into low friction. Sliding has oriented the polymer chains into discrete molecular layers, each layer having the thickness of the polymer backbone.

Diffusion of a polymer 'pancake.'
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the diffusion of flexible polymer chains into a flat 'pancake' conformation. The center-of-mass diffusion coefficient and the non-linear dependance of polymer diffusion are discussed.
