Political crisis threatens delay to revitalized Italian programme
Article Abstract:
The future of the Italian Space Agency's planned $3.8 billion programme for 1998 to 2002 has been called into question by the collapse of the government of Romano Prodi. If a general election is called, rather than an interim government being established, parliamentary approval of the 1998 budget will probably not be issued before the end of 1997. This would cause delays to new initiatives for early 1998. The new programme places strong emphasis on science, which would take more than 20% of the budget.

Database to standardize mouse phenotyping
Article Abstract:
Scientists in several US laboratories have launched a pilot study to systematically characterize 21 commonly used genetically homogeneous strains of mice. The move is part of the Mouse Phenotyping Initiative which aims to develop an accessible database of traits of inbred mouse strains. A list of inbred strains and phenotypes to be included in the database has been drawn up by the Mouse Phenotype Initiative's steering group.
