Structure of a molecular hole-punch
Article Abstract:
Several bacterial toxins kill their target cell by puncturing the cellular membrane and causing the electrochemical gradients across the membrane to dissipate. To achieve this, some toxins only have to penetrate the membrane to form a channel. Other toxins, such as the colicins, must make the additional effort of binding to the cell's outer membrane and then forming an ion channel to the inner membrane. A new study by Wiener et al. provides insights into how colicin Ia works.

Water at the nanoscale
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the information which can be gained regarding the behavior of biological pores through the study of water in a hydrophobic nanotube made of carbon. Molecular dynamics simulations of the process are discussed.
