A trap-building predator exhibits different tactics for different aspects of foraging behaviour
Article Abstract:
The foraging behavior of three populations of the large, orb-weaving spider, Nephila clavipes were compared in their natural environment. Foraging success did not differ in populations with the same climates. The Veracruz, Mexico and wet season Panama spider populations capture more and larger prey. Orb size is directly related to spider size and to times of decreased mean rate of prey capture. Decreased mean prey capture caused longer foraging bouts but not increased diet breadth.

A virtual robot to model the use of regenerated legs in a web-building spider
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to test if a virtual spider robot can imitate the web construction behavior of a garden cross orb-spider that lost one of its legs. Results reveal that handicapped spiders and their virtual reproductions produce webs that have more gaps in successive spiral turns compared to those made by nonhandicapped spiders. It was also observed that web interception frequency is only affected by prey size, size of capture area and individual variance.

Web-building behaviour in the orb-weaving spider Zygiella x-notata: Influence of experience
Article Abstract:
The orb-weaving spider Zygiella x-notata renews its trap daily. Its ability to modify its building behavior in response to predation experiences with a previous web has been tested. Information gained during prey capture seemed to influence the size and structure of the next web.
