Sulphur greases the wheels
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the chemical reactions that produce petroleum involve sulphur radicals initiating the breaking of C-C bonds within kerogen. This produces the many hydrocarbon fragments that make up oil. Structural weaknesses cause the generation of sulphur radicals, but the activation of these radicals allows cleavage of C-C bonds during petroleum generation, rather than the formation process itself. It will be increasingly important to develop predictive models for locating oil and gas deposits as resources become more scarce.

Biological activity in the deep subsurface and the origin of heavy oil
Article Abstract:
Bio-degraded oils are most important in the world petroleum inventory which is found on the flanks of fore land basins in America. It also represents a significant portion in conventional oil reserves.
