Swifter, higher, stronger: pushing the envelope of performance
Article Abstract:
The Olympic spirit of 'swifter, higher, stronger' may soon be up against a physiological barrier as scientific evidence points to a definite limit to athletic achievements. Despite the inconclusive data, researchers focus on the limits of physiological performance of human organs and the fact that top athletes are approaching an optimum level of performance. Declining levels of physical fitness in the west have given the impetus to performance enhancing techniques, such as improved training and equipment. Many believe this can compensate for inevitable limits on human physiological achievements.

Nobel goes to T-cell pioneers whose work 'changed face of immunology.'
Article Abstract:
Immunologists Peter C. Doherty and Rolf M. Zinkernagel were awarded the 1996 Nobel prize for physiology or medicine for their landmark research on the ways in which the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. Doherty is an adjunct professor of pathology and pediatrics at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine while Zinkernagel is chief of the institute of immunology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Their discovery, which was first published in Nature in Apr. 1974, has led to a better understanding of infectious diseases and chronic inflammatory conditions.

Biodiversity projects face funding challenges
Article Abstract:
The United Nations' Global Environmental Facility (GEF) has awarded only $23 million for biodiversity projects in 1997 compared to the average annual grants of $80 million for the past four years. GEF blamed this reduced support on developing countries' lack of expertise in developing acceptable research proposals. In funding environmental projects, the GEF requires a high degree of public participation among applicant countries.
