Synchronized division proteins
Article Abstract:
The 3.8 angstrom image reconstruction of the tubulin alpha/beta heterodimer confirms many elements of the working model built up since the 1960s from indirect biochemical analysis. It has been possible to determine the structure of Zn2+-induced sheets of anti-parallel alpha/beta tubulin protafilaments, with GTP bound to the alpha-subunit, and taxol* and GDP bound to the beta-subunit. Separately, it has also been possible to determine the 2.8 angstrom crystallographic structure of Methanococcus jannaschii FtsZ. This creates a filamentous ring-shaped septum at the division site of prokaryotes.

Rooting the meristem
Article Abstract:
The stem cells of a root meristem are organized around a quiescent center that appears to play a major role in the functional organization of the root meristem. This quiescent center is useful in keeping the cell division of physically adjacent stem cells active. The quiescent cell divide the stem cells into an upper and lower tier of initial cells. Stem cells or their daughter cells are quenched to analyze the source of cortex/endodermis cell fate since the other cells either divide incorrectly or take over the missing functions.

Hotheaded healer
Article Abstract:
A mutant gene nicknamed 'Hothead' has been discovered. The gene does not seem to encode a protein with an obvious connection to DNA repair. This is leaving scientists to speculate that the high revision frequency associated with the gene might indicate a response to some sort of elevated metabolic stress.
