Synchrotron proposals spark high-energy debate in Japan
Article Abstract:
The proposal put forth by Tokyo University's Institute for Nuclear Study (INS) to set up a 50-GeV proton synchrotron has created divisions among the high-energy physics community as it would impede the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics' plans to build the Japan Linear Collider (JLC). JLC supporters anticipate that the INS proposal would make it more difficult for them to secure funding for their own project. The INS proposal has been compelled by a rivalry between the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the Science and Technology Agency.

Japan explores the boundary between food and medicine
Article Abstract:
Japanese companies are beginning to market some altered foods as medicinal, under recent legislation. Cosmetics manufacturer Shiseido is the first to do so, with a rice from which a common allergen has been removed. The protein globulin causes large red lesions on some Japanese; the treated rice prevents a reaction in 70% of those allergic. At least 14 more products have been or are being approved, which allows the makers to claim medicinal benefits on the label.

Japan embarks on an academic computer network
Article Abstract:
Japan's science-related government arms have united behind a proposed academic computer network. The unusual coalition may not last long, and is likely to fight over portions of the still-vaguely defined network. Current computer networks are the result of individual initiative rather than government action. The proposal calls for up to 30 national hubs and a $450 million, three-year budget, but those figures are likely to shrink.
