Proposal opens debate over US data on animals
Article Abstract:
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) collects statistics on the use of laboratory animals for research, education and testing. Presently it asks researchers to report the pain suffered by research subjects according to three-level system. The Humane Society has proposed a system with five gradations of pain, but researchers fear that such reporting could be used by animal rights advocates to turn public opinion against animal research. Also, the collection of such statistics is beyond the resources of the USDA.

Head of US drug company takes Serbian post
Article Abstract:
ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc's founder, Pres and CEO Milan Panic was named prime minister of what is left of Yugoslavia in Jun 1992. Panic, a native Serbian who went to the US in 1956, will lead Serbia and Montenegro, the two remaining Yugoslavian republics, as they seek to end the war in the former Yugoslavia. Panic acquired a reputation for boldness and controversy as the head of ICN, which he forged into a multi-million-dollar company. Panic's false promotion of ribavirin as an AIDS drug was especially questionable.

Researchers see obstacles in using spy data
Article Abstract:
The US military has started to declassify data gathered by aircraft, spy satellites and nuclear submarines in the hope that this information will benefit scientists, especially regarding climatic change research. However, many scientists fear that the fragmentary and unsystematic nature of this information may impair its usefulness. Senator Al Gore initiated the move toward declassification in 1990 when he prompted the Navy to publish measurements of Arctic ice thickness obtained by submarines.
