Synthetic molecules that fold into a pleated secondary structure in solution
Article Abstract:
A research study describes the synthesis of molecules that assume a pleated shape when combined with water as a result of interactions involving alternating electron-rich donor groups and electron-deficient acceptor groups. The pleated structure was verified via absorption and NMR spectroscopy. Results show that donor-acceptor interactions can be used to determine the secondary structure of complex synthetic molecules in solution.

Molecules are cool
Article Abstract:
Two new methods of cooling and trapping molecules were introduced in 1998. One method was to form Cs molecules from laser-cooled Cs atoms and confine them in a light trap. The other was to cool CaH molecules with a cryogenically refrigerated buffer gas and load them into a magnetic trap.
